Review highlights

Based on 336 reviews

The Tin Trout is widely appreciated for its charming, rustic ambiance set in a repurposed home, offering a cozy and unique dining experience. Guests frequently praise the quality and flavor of the seafood dishes, particularly the smoked trout and fried options, alongside standout sides like cornbread and inventive accompaniments. The restaurant’s BYOB policy with a reasonable corkage fee is often noted as a positive feature. Service is commonly described as attentive and accommodating, especially for special events such as catering weddings. While the décor and atmosphere receive mixed impressions due to its eclectic, homey style, the overall combination of friendly service, flavorful food, and welcoming environment keeps patrons returning.

We fish the area and have passed by for years. Today we came up to enjoy Linville Falls Winery and decided on dinner at The Tin Trout. We came as the door opened at 5 for dinner. The place was so cute and we enjoyed sitting in the back area with the windows. Ordered drinks (they do not serve alcohol but you can bring your own in according to their menu! Note to self: bring a bottle of wine next time !) and we were given a complimentary bowl of homemade pickles which were so good. Our server was polite and we didn’t wait long for anything we needed . Appetizers: we went with the Trio of dips. Smoked trout, pimento cheese and bleu cheese dips - opted for the pita instead of saltines for 1.50 upcharge- they were all delicious and the warm pita bread was fantastic to dip in them- I do wish you got more pita because it’s a lot of dip- so I ordered extra pita. The dips were wonderful but definitely could have done without green onions on all of them. Dinner: *shrimp and grits- doesn’t come with a side so added collard greens for additional charge. These shrimp and grits were fantastic and I could’ve licked the plate. Collards were also delicious and perfectly cooked and seasoned - though I added vinegar to them because ….they were mine and that’s how i eat them The shrimp and grits were so good 10/10 but again- didn’t need green onions He ordered the *chicken & waffle with hot honey. Definitely did not need green onions. It’s like a theme they’re running with The chicken had good crunch to it and the waffle had good flavor and the hot honey drizzle added a nice touch of sweet/spicy- though We do wish they gave you a little side of syrup or something because it was a bit dry but still excellent. Dessert: holy cow. Stop right now because I would go back just for dessert - there was a lot of options and ran $8 each. We were splurging so bought three different ones *The ooey gooey butter cake with ice cream should not be missed - oh my gosh it was good - buttery, rich- just do it, take my word for it that you definitely won’t regret it. *Lemoncello mascarpone cake was light and not overly sweet- it was refreshing and just the perfect lemon taste *Dubai chocolate cheesecake was phenomenal. Again not too sweet. The textures together of the layers were really nice and the chocolate ganache on top was really delish. Overall it was a place we would return to. But I would next time ask that they leave the green onions off of every single dish (don’t worry, desserts were spared from them ) The food was just really flavorful and the atmosphere was really cute, inviting and relaxing. The price was fair and with appetizer, extra pita x2, two entrees, add on a side side , three desserts and two drinks we spent $78 and it was the best meal we had in a while on a date . We can’t wait to come back and check out their burger and other menu options!!

The Tin Trout is a fabulous restaurant! We just used them to cater my daughter's wedding reception a week ago and I can't say enough good things about them! The food was exceptional. Everything was warm and set up so nicely for us. They went above and beyond for service, quality and price. While we were on our hunt for a good caterer, Tin Trout was head and shoulders above the rest. Many of our guests commented on how good the food was and they've already been recommended to those who live in the area. My mother in law said it was the best meal she's had catered (and she's 83). Thank you all!

It's out on a 2 lane in a rural/ residential place, so not unusual for the area. Food is honest but heavy. Generally crowded, so there's happy folks. They charge $4 corkage pp, but you keep the decent quality logo glass. Seems more than fair. I left 'atmosphere' unmarked. Its a repurposed home with a gravel lot Window unit AC, confused decor. Some folks say quaint/funky....I'm all about food and service when it's mealtime. Don't expect 'Romantic' or 'upscale'.

Had my birthday lunch here. Fun atmosphere. Turned an old garage into a restaurant. Started with fried green tomatoes $6.99 (not pictured) with hot honey drizzle on the side. Fried fish (flounder) good-sized portion with slaw (bland) & fries $14.95. My grilled trout was a very small thin piece for $15.95, but it was tasty. The bacon greenbean side was pickled (vinegary). Tiramisu was incredible $8. Service was decent for a busy Friday lunch. The back dining room was warm. The back dining room would have a nice view of the creek IF they would put the tables and chairs up on a rise. Lots of parking out back.

I had a great meal at The Tin Trout. The smoked trout was very good—nicely done and full of flavor. I also really enjoyed the smoked trout dip. But the real standout was the cornbread. It was served warm with a slightly spicy honey on the side, and it was honestly the best part of the meal. The service was also excellent. Definitely a place I’d go back to.

We had an amazing dining experience. Quick, friendly service, and amazing food! The fried green tomatoes and the grilled trout were wonderful. We each tried a different dessert and each were great, pictured is the lemon berry mascarpone!

I rarely get excited to post a review after visiting a place for the first time - but I'm excited to post this. Backstory. We've lived in the area for 3 years and often considered, but never eaten here. Why? Can't get adult beverages. We generally don't eat out unless we need an escape and as such, I like to have a cocktail. Then I learned you can BYOB here and once I knew this, it was on the list. Very comfortable spot. Easy parking and loved the corner booth. Get there early. We arrived at 530ish and were sat immediately but by 645, there were folks waiting (short wait, and this is peak summer season). Server was amazing. Didn't hover but was anxious to take care of us. We started with the fried oysters app and hushpuppies. Both were exceptional. The oysters were lightly battered and fried (oil was fresh). HPs were insanely well done. Moist throughout and so flavorful. The chow chow was great as was the remoulade. I got the fried shrimp basket (added flounder) with fries, slaw and collards. Shrimp and flounder were lightly breaded and again, the fresh fryer oil was a win. Slaw was the only thing I didn't love. Fries were fine but I'm not a battered fry guy. Collards were above average. She had the fried chicken and it was so dang good. Closest comparison was deep fried turkey. Well seasoned, moist, light and no breading. And then there was the coconut cake. I don't have a sweet tooth, but it was very good. Their dessert offering is special on it's own right. Pack a cooler (if that's your thing) and check this place out sooner than later. Everyone was so nice and genuinely seemed happy to be working there. Thank you for a wonderful experience! (Oops forgot the pickles, what a great warm up and palate cleanser).
